Home Botanicals: How Flowers Have Been Used to Decorate, Heal and Nourish

Chelsea Textiles hosts a talk and cocktail evening with textile designer Neisha Crosland and Museum of Home curator Danielle Patten.

Plants are central to keeping our homes healthy and beautiful – for centuries, herbs and flowers have been used in domestic life to clean, nourish, heal and decorate. Ever since Neisha spotted her grandfather’s edition of Culpeper’s ‘Complete Herbal’, the 17th-century compendium of medicinal herbs and plants, she was hooked on drawing plants. For this special London Craft Week event, Neisha has put together a group of hand-painted artworks that have inspired her fabrics, wallpapers, tiles, carpets and much of the embroideries that she has created with Chelsea Textiles.

In addition to this, Chelsea Textiles displays the antique documents that have inspired some of their most iconic botanical designs. Drawing on botanical objects from the Museum of the Home’s collections, curator Danielle Patten explores how we have engaged with and can utilise nature in our homes. Botanical cocktails are served using herbs straight from the garden of the Museum of Home.
