The Nara Collection by Robert Kime and Tory Burch

This spring, Robert Kime and Tory Burch introduced The Nara Collection at Robert Kime, a group of fabrics and a wallpaper inspired by a journey the pair took together to Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan in 2019.

Nara, an ancient city and home to some of Japan's oldest temples, shrines and ruins, lends its name to the collection. On their journey, Tory and Robert explored cities and landscapes, taking in historic and symbolic treasures and the area's rich artistic heritage. The collection, comprised of ten digitally printed fabrics, one weave and one wallpaper - marks a collaboration and friendship which solidified over Robert's recent interior design project at Tory and husband Pierre-Yves Roussel’s house in Normandy, France.

In speaking of the collection, Robert Kime states, “I see indigo as Japan’s universal color, so we leaned heavily into the blues. It was a unique experience, digging into the textile history of Japan. Unlike the French and English, there isn’t a lot of organization around the concept of documents in Japan, so we traveled to very out of the way places to look to understand the background and history.

Tory Burch states, “I have always loved Robert’s work. He can make any room look perfectly imperfect. His approach is eclectic and I love how he has no rules, combining objects from different periods. His rooms are cozy, as if they have existed for years. Nothing feels too designed.

We often spoke of our shared love of Japan and decided to plan an inspiration trip together. Traveling with him was delightful. He has a keen ability to see beauty in unexpected ways and I always learn a great deal watching him work. This collection is inspired by our time there, taking in the beauty of the region, its unique traditions, rich artistry and subtle details. It is a celebration of this extraordinary culture.”
